Margin calculator
Margin is the money your broker sets aside to hold a leveraged position. Knowing it before you enter helps you avoid a forced close.

- Required margin (account currency)

- Free margin after opening

- Margin level

How it works
Position value = lots × contract size × price. Margin = position value (in your account currency) ÷ leverage. Free margin = equity − margin. Margin level = equity ÷ margin × 100%.
Worked example
0.5 lot of EUR/USD at 1.10 with 1 : 100 leverage on a USD account: position value = 0.5 × 100,000 × 1.10 = 55,000 USD; margin = 550 USD. With 2,000 equity, free margin is 1,450 and the margin level is about 363.6%.
Things to watch
- Margin rules and stop-out levels differ between brokers.
- High leverage lowers the margin needed, but it does not lower the risk of loss.
- Other open positions use margin too.
